Painting watercolor pictures is the most difficult of the three traditional painting mediums (oil and acrylic being the other two). A watercolor artist cannot make mistakes, or if a mistake is made, the artist has to live with it. As a watercolor artist, you have to plan your pictures carefully. You have to put light tones down first, or they are gone forever. I love the variations you can get when painting watercolor pictures. You can use light strokes and little paint to get a soft luminescent image. Or, you can use a lot of paint with little water to get a bold, opaque result. I am leaning more to gouache painting in my art because the gouache paints are more opaque and provide a striking difference between colors. I tend to be more freeform in my watercolor pictures and gouache paintings, doing both landscape and portrait painting. I am not as latched to realism with this art medium as I am with pencil.
