Painting watercolor pictures is the most difficult of the three traditional painting mediums (oil and acrylic being the other two). A watercolor artist cannot make mistakes, or if a mistake is made, the artist has to live with it. As a watercolor artist, you have to plan your pictures carefully. You have to put light tones down first, or they are gone forever.

I love the variations you can get when painting watercolor pictures. You can use light strokes and little paint to get a soft luminescent image. Or, you can use a lot of paint with little water to get a bold, opaque result. I am leaning more to gouache painting in my art because the gouache paints are more opaque and provide a striking difference between colors.

I tend to be more freeform in my watercolor pictures and gouache paintings, doing both landscape and portrait painting. I am not as latched to realism with this art medium as I am with pencil.

Supplies used to produce these watercolor pictures and gouache watercolor paintings include Strathmore 300 Series Watercolor Paper, Fredrix Red Label Stretched Cotton Canvas, Van Gogh Watercolor Pan Set, Pelikan Opaque Watercolor Sets, and Royal taklon brushes. I used a Canon LiDE 30 scanner to scan the pictures.
