Important Links for Artists and Art Lovers

Here you will find sites that carry art prints, posters, originals, supplies, and books. More importantly, I show you how to sell your art online via merchandising. While you may dislike selling, you need to do it if you want to be a successful artist.

Prints and Posters

If you are like me, you don't have thousands of dollars to spend on artwork. So, you go for the cheaper fine art prints and posters. Go to these places to find virtually any piece of art you want.

  • printfinders.com carries 150,000 art prints and posters, in all genres. They also carry movie posters, and they have a framing service. This place is like the Louvre. You could spend days here and still see less than half of it. Get your Klimt here!
  • If you are looking fo a great art site on the net, I found allposters.com. This is the world's largest poster and print store. In addition to carrying art prints, they carry movie, music, and sports posters, among others. They also have framing and mounting services (where they bond your print to a hardboard backing). They have great service and they ship your artwork quickly and safely. I have not read one bad review about this place.

Original Art

If you are looking for original artwork for sale, I have listed a site that concentrates mostly on contemporary and modern art. The prices for works on this site range anywhere from $50 US to $300,000 US.

  • Picasso Mio carries original modern, abstract, and contemporary paintings and sculptures. They also carry limited edition prints. I love "Laughing Cow" by Diego Manuel Rodriguez.

Art Supply Stores

  • I go to a local arts and crafts supply store not too far from my home. However, they carry more crafts than arts, so I often go home empty-handed. When I arrive at home, I hop on my computer and go to DickBlick.com. (I should probably start here, but hey, sometimes I like to get out of the house.) They have tons of online art supplies, and their prices are reasonable. I can get watercolor paints, brushes, paper, canvases, and books there. I will probably hop over there when I try my hand at acrylics.
  • To shop around, I hop over to MisterArt.com. They do not have as big a selection as Dick Blick, and they seem to carry more student material than professional material. However, their prices are usually lower than those at Dick Blick. So, if I find something at Dick Blick, I go here just to see if I can get it at a lower price. I also like Mister Art because they carry mailing tubes and tape. I can only find storage tubes at Dick Blick.

Fine Art Books

  • DickBlick.com and MisterArt.com carry books, particularly ones that teach a certain technique, such as watercolor or pastel painting.
  • Of course, you can find a bunch of fine art books at Amazon.com. They not only carry books on technique, but also on genres and individual artists. I shop here so often, they used to send me Christmas gifts, but they don't seem to do that anymore (perhaps they're trying to make a profit for a change).
  • If you are looking for fine art books at a discount, you can try Book Closeouts. They carry remainder titles that sell out quickly because they're inexpensive. So if you're going to buy, you better make up your mind fast.
  • If you want to make a career as an artist, you can check out fine art books by Allworth Press. This company deals in books for creative people. They have a concentrated list of titles that show you how to survive and prosper as an artist. I have read a couple of their books and found them informative.
  • If you want to want to learn a new medium or enhance your art career, check out my new list of books for artists and art lovers. Here, you will discover comprehensive information on how to succeed in the art world, as well as books on technique.
  • If you are interested in selling your art online, you can get some free art marketing e-books from Site Sell that show you how to publicize your site. I have downloaded a couple of their books, and they helped me not only develop a better site, but promote it as well.

Merchandising Your Art

A great way to make money from your art is to merchandise it. With merchandising, you put your artwork on t-shirts, mugs, posters, greeting cards, and other stuff. Normally, you have to fill out a licensing agreement with a company, which then makes and markets all your art gifts.

CafePress.com does it a little differently. You merchandise the art yourself. You set up a store on their site, download your images, and then choose which products you want to sell. They make and ship the products for you. You get a fee for each sale, determined by you.

This place is pretty cool. I recently set up my art store and it was very easy to do. I filled out a form, and I was ready to go. I took my time setting up my artwork for upload because I wanted to get the proper dimensions and resolutions for each product. Once I was done, uploading my work to their site was a simple one-step process. And designing the products was a snap as well.

Best of all, my store was free. I did not have to pay anything to set it up. I got the basic store. The one drawback to this type of store is that I can only sell one of each product per store. For example, I can sell only one large poster per basic store on my site.

However, they do let you set up as many basic stores as you want. I currently have a dozen or so basic stores. That way, I can sell more than one of each product. For instance, I have one basic store that sells mugs based on "The Meeting" artwork. I have another basic store that sells mugs based on my "Midnight Orange" piece.

You can link to all your basic stores using a single URL with commas between the store names; for example www.cafeshops.com/yourstore1,yourstore2,etc.

Depending upon how many pieces of artwork you have, you may have dozens of basic stores. This can get unwieldy.

They do offer a premium store that enables you to sell as much of each product as you like. For example, you can sell large posters, mugs, and t-shirts of all your artwork from one store. If you buy a premium store for a year, it is only $5.00 per month. Once my store gets its sales increasing, I am going to switch to the premium store. That way, I can sell prints and other merchandise of all my artwork from a single premium store, instead of having to sell merchandise through dozens of basic stores. Premium stores also get access to more products, such as framed prints.
